  • Academic Research

You can apply for a personal research grant if you hold a master’s degree and are continuing your studies towards a licentiate degree or a PhD, or if you have completed your PhD and intend to undertake post-doctoral research.

SLS does not award grants to professors with a permanent posts. The same applies to senior lecturers whose posts provide opportunities for research. However, professors and senior lecturers can be awarded personal travel grants and grants for materials and external services.

SLS does not award grants for work towards a master’s thesis.

If you are applying for a personal research grant from SLS, you can be awarded funding for a work room at a university or university college. (See Work room at a university)

Grants for longer visits to universities, higher education institutions or research institutes abroad can be applied for from the Council of Finnish Foundations’ Post Doc Pool, of which SLS is a member.

    Amount of grant

Applicant per month (€) per year (€)
    Doctoral student 2,200 26,400
    Postdoctoral researcher 2,600 31,200
PhD at Associate Professor (docent) level or higher 3,200

    38,400

Amounts include statutory pension and accident insurance (14% of the amount shown). The annual tax-free threshold is EUR 20,461.72 (2018). The recipient of the grant pays tax on the amount in excess of this figure. The recipient of the grant undertakes to conduct research on a full-time basis.

    Work room at a University

Doctoral students and PhD holders can indicate on the application form if they require a work room at or close to the university. In such cases, a research grant awarded will be increased by 7% to account for the cost of the room. Applicants should check whether their university charges for a work room before applying.

The grant, including the additional amount, will be paid once the scholar has entered into a contract with the university regarding the work room and SLS has received the signed contract. The university will subsequently invoice the scholar for the work room. SLS will not pay the additional amount to the scholar if no contract is entered into.

The university enters into a contract with the researcher on the following conditions:

      • If the recipient of the grant is registered as a PhD student at the university, a contract will always be entered into.
      • If the recipient of the grant has completed a PhD, a contract will be entered into if the department in which the research is to be conducted is able to do so.

The department is responsible for ensuring that the scholar is given a work room in line with the same standard as applies to the university’s employees with equivalent duties. The department also takes care of other basic requirements , such as suitable workspace and laboratory premises, data communication, mail and printer services, and access to library and information services (if permitted by licencing rules). The scope of these services will be the same as those provided by the university to its employees.

Provision of a computer or phone need not be included, and nor is occupational healthcare or other social benefits granted to the university’s employees.

The workroom provided may be shared by several recipients of grants or scholars.
