Grant & Research Funding Application Instructions

Please write your application in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or English and submit it using the SLS online application system.

The terms and conditions for applying for the various grants and funding available are set out below, together with application instructions. Please read them carefully. Please note that no changes can be made to applications once they have been submitted.

The applicant is to be one and the same as the person/organisation awarded the grant of research funding. When the applicant is an organisation, the organisation’s business identity code must be stated.

  • Academic Research

    You can apply for a personal research grant if you hold a master’s degree and are continuing your studies towards a licentiate degree or a PhD, or if you have completed your PhD and intend to undertake post-doctoral research.

    SLS does not award grants for work towards a master’s thesis.

    Grants for longer visits to universities, higher education institutions or research institutes abroad can be applied for from the Council of Finnish Foundations’ Post Doc Pool, of which SLS is a member.

    Amounts include statutory pension and accident insurance (14% of the amount shown). The annual tax-free threshold is EUR 24 761,09 euro (2022). The recipient of the grant pays tax on the amount in excess of this figure. It is preferable that the recipient of the grant undertakes to conduct research on a full-time basis.

    Research Plan

     The application form includes a section for the research plan. The research plan is not to be submitted as a separate attachment.

    Publication Plan

    Mandatory for PhD holders applying for grants. A separate publication plan should be appended to the application. PhD holders can apply for costs of open access publication, but not in hybrid journals.

    Résumé/Curriculum Vitae

    Mandatory for doctoral students and PhD holders applying for grants. The curriculum vitae must comply with the Template for a researcher’s curriculum vitae provided by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK).

    List of Publications

    Mandatory for PhD holders applying for grants. The list of publications is to be drawn up in accordance with the Academy of Finland’s Guidelines for a complete list of publications.

    SLS only awards grants and funding to professional artists and musicians or organisations. Research projects cannot apply for grants.

    If you are applying for a personal grant, the amount cannot exceed EUR 2,800 per month unless there is a well-justified reason for this.

    Project Plan

    The plan must include a description of the project, a brief presentation of the person/people who will do the work, and a description of the objectives and target groups.

    Résumé/Curriculum Vitae

    A curriculum vitae is mandatory for private individuals submitting an application. Where applicable, the curriculum vitae must comply with the Template for a researcher’s curriculum vitae provided by the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (TENK).

  • Travel grants, materials costs, external services, printing grants, and conferences/seminars

    Travel grants can be awarded to scholars for travel to conferences or to gather research material. Funding for conferences will only be awarded if the scholar is giving a lecture or otherwise participating in the conference programme. Travel grants can also be awarded to scholars working with history or documentation if they will be gathering material.

    Funding for obtaining materials and external services can be awarded to scholars and individuals/organisations for history or documentation. The acquisition of materials and/or the external service must be directly related to the work in progress.

    Printing grants are awarded for the printing of books or articles or for publication in digital form. The application is open in September only. The work must be of relevance to the Swedish language or the Swedish cultural heritage in Finland and furthermore a publisher in Finland must publish the work. Funding cannot be awarded retroactively. Funding is not granted for festschrifts.

    Funding is granted for organising conferences and seminars. Only organisations are eligible to apply. The conference must be of relevance to the Swedish language or Swedish cultural heritage in Finland.
