SLS introduces a range of new funding schemes starting in 2027. In addition to positions for postdoctoral researchers, SLS also intriduces new forms of support for literature and the digitisation of cultural heritage. Furthermore, SLS is launching an entirely new grant for projects aimed at strengthening the position of the humanities in society.
Literature Grants
SLS is introducing two new grants to promote literature:
Publishing Support will help professional publishers maintain a broad, high-quality publishing programme and thereby promote the diversity of Swedish-language literature published in Finland. The grant may be used for editorial work, graphic design, printing costs, and the production of e-books and audiobooks.
Support for Literary Promotion Projects will fund initiatives such as literary video productions, local literary festivals and book fairs, and marketing campaigns promoting literature and reading. The grant is open to organisers operating in Finland.
Support for the Digitisation of Cultural Heritage
SLS is establishing two new funding schemes for the digitisation of cultural heritage materials related to Swedish-speaking Finland. During spring 2027, professional cultural heritage institutions, such as archives, libraries, and museums, will be able to apply for grants to digitise and make large collections accessible. SLS will also provide funding to public-sector organisations for the digitisation and accessibility of larger nationally significant collections.
The aim of these funding schemes is to make Swedish-language cultural heritage in Finland digitally accessible to researchers, other interested users, and AI models.
New Research Positions
SLS will announce new positions for researchers holding a doctoral degree. The funding will provide employment at a university in Finland for up to three years. The positions are for both recently graduated doctoral researchers and more established scholars.
Individual researchers and research groups will also be able to apply for a new grant scheme, SLS Initiation, which can support activities such as planning meetings, research networks, small conferences, method development, pilot studies, and other initiatives that contribute to the development of new research projects.
Research scholarships and project funding will continue to be announced according to the usual schedule, with scholarship applications opening in February and project funding applications in March.
Support for Strengthening the Humanities
As part of its strategy to strengthen the position of the humanities, SLS is launching a new funding scheme, for initiatives aimed at enhancing the impact and societal relevance of the humanities. The intention is to foster new collaborations between humanities, other academic fields, and the business sector. The purpose is to lay the foundation for long-term initiatives that can later be implemented with additional funding.
