Because the database is in Swedish you have to use Swedish words when you search the database. Translations of terminology, common words and names of the countries can be found here.

What youre able to search for in the different searchfields

Author

Includes editors and authors whose text(s) are included in an edition.

Publication year

If you want to look for books published during a certain time period use "...". For instance, if you want search for books published between 1880 and 1895 you type 1880... 1895. If you'd like to search for books published during a certain decade you leave out the last zero, for the 1870s you type 187. If you want to look for editions from a certain century you leave out the last two zeros; for the 1700s (18th century) you type 17.

Place of printing

The name of the cities where the books have been printed are in the same language as the books are and in Swedish. It is also possible to search for countries (in Swedish, of course).

Plates & Illustrations

You can search for illustrators, engravers as well as by the techniques used.

Contributors to the visual

It is possible to search for illustrators, engravers and designers of the book covers.

Orderer's home country

The orderer of the bookbinding is a private person, publishing company, a book seller etc. Look for the translations of the names of the countries here.

Bookbinder/Bookbindery

You can search by the name of a bookbinder/bookbindery and by names of cities. The results according to possible signatures or other information in the book, or in some cases according to conclusions made by Anna Perälä.

Description of Binding, Spine and Coloured/Decorated edges

It is possible to search for type of binding, materials, technique, styles and decoration. See the lists.

Provenance

You can look for peoples names. See list for further search options.

Other search tips

  • If you don't know the beginning of a word you can use an *""*. By doing so you will find words containing the letter combination you've used. For example; the search *"marmor"* in the field for the cover will bring about every book that has this specific letter combination somewhere in its cover-description.
  • By only using the first letters in a word you can look for books with the same characteristics etc. but where the word infliction in the descriptions differs from one another.
  • You may also search in several fields at the same time to narrow down the search results.
  • If a volume contains several editions, it is mentioned in the field Binding. The description of the binding in question can only be found in the information for the first edition in the volume in question.

About the pictures

The individual search results show one or more of the below mentioned pictures:

  • The upper cover, mostly with the spine.
  • The lower cover if it differs fundamentally (i.e. other than by linear lines) from the upper cover.
  • Decorated endpapers or pastedowns (apart from coloured paper and moarépaper); in some cases other pastedowns, for instance to show the decorated turn-ins or an exlibris.
  • Frontispiece, if there is one.
  • Original wrappers in case they are bound in a book with hard covers.
  • Primary and secondary (mostly half title) title pages.
  • Some decorated edges.
