Jarl Pousar's Book Collection

Jarl Pousar.Jarl Pousar (1941–2004).

Jarl Pousar, M.A., librarian and chief of the Exchange Centre for Scientific Literature in Helsinki (Helsingfors), was a bibliophile and book collector. He had a fascination for beautiful books and bookbindings, being especially intrested in publishers’ bindings from the 19th century.

In 1998, he donated a large part of his collection to the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (Svenska litteratursällskapet i Finland, SLS). It contains about 2500 volumes from different centuries and different countries: scientific literature, e.g. theology and humanities, travel books, fiction, children’s literature, hymn books, etc. More than 1600 of the volumes are publishers’ bindings, mainly from Europe, and the majority of them have their origin in Finland, Sweden and Germany, followed by Denmark, France and the United Kingdom.

The Pousar database (www.sls.fi/pousar) contains detailed bibliographical information and descriptions of the bookbindings in the collection as well as digitized images of the covers, title pages, decorated endpapers and pastedowns, and frontispieces. The database is aimed to serve research on book history from various aspects. The catalogue was compiled by Anna Perälä. She describes the book collection in her richly illustrated book Vackert, vittert, lärt.

  • If you don't know the beginning of a word you can use an *""*. By doing so you will find words containing the letter combination you've used. For example; the search *"marmor"* in the field for the cover will bring about every book that has this specific letter combination somewhere in its cover-description.
  • By only using the first letters in a word you can look for books with the same characteristics etc. but where the word infliction in the descriptions differs from one another.
  • You may also search in several fields at the same time to narrow down the search results.
  • If a volume contains several editions, it is mentioned in the field Binding. The description of the binding in question can only be found in the information for the first edition in the volume in question.
